Connecting Instagram and Google +

Now that almost everyone has started using Google+ as a common social networking medium sharing in Circles is gonna get very common.

We already covered how to port all your old Instagram photos to Google+ ( Picasa provides unlimited ish storage ) but what about your photos which you click via Instagram now?

Sooner or late this feature would come to Instagram but till then we can use this workaround.

There are actually two methods to do this, First lets cover the complicated method,

 ‘Instagram > Dropbox > Picasa > Google +’ Method

This includes having a free/pro Dropbox account.
Lets get on it

  • Connect your Instagram Account to Dropbox – This feature would enable you to save all your instagram photos in your Dropbox Account as soon as you share them on your Instagram stream.
  • Download Picasa Desktop Application – Once installed.
Choose ‘Add a New Folder’ from Picasa menu and point it to the Dropbox folder that was just created by your earlier step.
  • Now you have to make sure that the Instagram folder you just selected stays synced all the time with Picasa.
For that go to Tools > Folder Manager , Choose the Instagram folder choose the option to ‘Scan Always‘ .
  • In the sidebar which has folders in the Picasa App, choose ‘Enable Sync‘  for that folder in the Share options.

And you are done, now share a photo on Instagram and it would sync to your Dropbox folder pushing it to your Picasa and eventually to your Google+ Profile.

IFTTT.com Method

For this you need a ifttt.com account ( beta phase )
We have a few invites to give as of now.

  •  Go to your Picasa Web profile and create a new folder for your Instagram photos, lets name it Instagram. Add any photo to create that album.
Choose the Circles you want to share that folder with and share it on Google Plus

  • Go to the folder again and go to Photo Settings ( Gear icon on upper right corner ) Choose ‘Allow me to Upload Photos by email’ and enter the secret word which it would ask for. This should generate an email id. Copy that and keep it handy.
  • Login to your ifttt.com account. And setup a new task
If this : Selet Instagram > Authorize it > Any new Photo by you > Create Trigger >
then that : select Gmail action to Send an email to
    To :
    Picasa Generated Email id
    Subject :
Instagram ( folder which you created in Picasa web album )
    Body :
    Leave this blank
    Attachement URL :
    {{Source URL}}
  • Add a description to define the task as you want and create the task.

And you are done, now share a photo on Instagram and it would pass through the ifttt tasks you created mailing it to picasa, eventually to your Google + Profile

If you want an invite to ifttt.com tweet this post and mention @tftb in the tweet, we would randomly choose lucky users and contact them for an invitation.

Thank you for this great workaround. It works fine, but the pictures only show up in my google+ folder, but they don’t get automatically posted in my google+ timeline. what is it, I’m doing wrong?
